Sailkote is
easily applied by spraying or wiping onto a clean, dry surface.
The most important element of a successful application is to make
sure that all surfaces to be coated are perfectly clean and dry.
For instance, if you are applying sailkote to sail tracks, all previous
attempts at lubrication must be completely removed. This can most
effectively be done with a solvent such as acetone.
TEAM MCLUBE EQUIPMENT APPLICATION GUIDE:
Spray on a
thin, even coating avoiding drips and runs. After the first coating
is dry apply a second coat to ensure complete coverage. Be sure
to mask off any areas that you do not want coated. Sailkote is extremely
slippery!
For wiping application use a soft absorbent cotton cloth or small
cell sponge applying one even coat with a gentle even pressure in
the streamline direction.
Sailkote dries
to a hard film in a matter of seconds and can be put into service
immediately thereafter.
Sailkote is available in convenient 16oz. spray cans, as well as,
in quarts, one gallon cans and five gallon pails. When properly
applied Sailkote will last an entire season under normal conditions.
TEAM MCLUBE SAIL APPLICATION
GUIDE:
The benefits of coating spinnakers with Sailkote are listed below:
Minimize water absorption
to keep spinnaker as light as possible at all times
Minimize friction
when hoisting, dousing (and gybing assym) spinnakers
Maximize resistance
to tearing cloth on sharp objects
Minimize possibility
of mildew
The benefits of coating
genoas with Sailkote are listed below:
Minimize friction
when tacking (overlapping genoa against mast and shrouds) this friction
is the main cause of the breakdown of the genoa cloth and laminates.
Minimize water absorption
to keep genoas as light as possible at all times.
By coating luff tape
(or hanks) of sail, friction is dramatically reduced when hoisting.
For maximum benefit during peel changes, be sure to coat both sides
of genoa entirely.
Maximize resistance
to tearing cloth or laminate on spreader tips and sharp objects.
Keep telltales sensitive
and flying in wet conditions.
For best results, we prefer
to spray Sailkote over the 'cloth rag' or sponge application. We
recommend an HVLP (high volume, low pressure) paint sprayer, such
as the #HV-2000 which can be purchased through Campbell-Hausfeld
for about $285.00 (toll free order hotline # 800 543-6400).

Sails should be laid
out on a clean, flat surface (e.g. sail loft floor) in an area with
little or no wind, and PLENTY of ventilation.
Wearing a mask is
recommended anytime paint sprayers are in use.
Spinnakers must be
both clean and dry in order for Sailkote to adhere properly.
For spinnakers- a
VERY light coating on each side is all that is needed.
Multi-layered corners require
more coverage so try 3-4 coats on each side. Be
careful not to apply a heavy coating over any 'inked on' numbers
or logos, as this may cause them to run slightly or bleed.
Generally hold spray
nozzle about 1.5 to 2 feet from cloth.
Sail should only
appear 'wet' for 5-15 seconds or so. If sail never actually
'wets out', then possibly too little material is being applied,
or it may be drying prior to contact and it may fail to adhere properly.
If sail stays wet for more than 15 seconds, or if sail takes on
a slightly 'opaque' coating, then this is an indication that the
coating is being applied too heavily. Coating should never be applied
so heavily that it might 'drip or run'.
Following the above
guidelines, a Mumm-36 spinnaker takes about 10 minutes each side
to spray, and uses approximately 2 quarts of Sailkote.
Upon completion of
spraying, run acetone through sprayer for 30 seconds or more to
clean nozzle.
If properly applied,
Sailkote may last more than 100 spinnaker sets (generally this is
more than an entire season).
TEAM MCLUBE HULL APPLICATION
GUIDE:
The benefits of coating racing hulls with Sailkote are listed below:
Minimize friction
and maintain a clean, slick racing hull surface
Repel dirt, oil deposits
and grime from hull waterline area and below (no more dirty, black,
slow waterline debris stripe)
Significantly minimize
growth adhesion to hull
Any growth that does
actually manage to adhere to hull easily wipes away
Please note: the Sailkote
hull application concept is simple. Sailkote can be applied directly
to gelcoat, over a hard-coat bottompaint, or any other kind of bottompaint.
Remember, Sailkote will only adhere as well as whatever surface
is underneath it. Either gelcoated (or Awlgrip or LP) surfaces,
hard-coated (epoxy or copper based) bottompaints are recommended
due to the fact that they provide a relatively solid coating to
which Sailkote adheres nicely. If Sailkote is applied to chalky
or ablative bottompaints, longevity and durability may be compromised.
For best results, we prefer to spray Sailkote over the 'cloth rag'
or sponge application. We recommend an HVLP (high volume, low pressure)
paint sprayer, such as the #HV-2000 which can be purchased through
Campbell-Hausfeld for about $285.00 (toll free order hotline # 800
543-6400).

Hull should be completely
clean, dry and free of any contaminants. We recommend wiping hull
with acetone or other solvent to properly prepare surface.
Sailkote can either
be wiped or sprayed on.
Wiping Sailkote onto
the hull can easily be performed nearly anywhere.
For the serious racer,
we strongly recommend the spray application method.
Boatyard spray booth
is ideal, if not, minimum wind and PLENTY of ventilation is recommended.
Wearing a mask is
recommended anytime paint sprayers are in use.
A VERY light coating
is all that is needed. The waterline area and the leading
edges of the keel and rudder may require 3-4 coats, however, 2 light
coats over the entire hull area should suffice. Be careful not to
apply too heavy a coating.
Generally hold spray
nozzle about 1.5 to 2 feet from hull.
Hull should only
appear 'wet' for 5-15 seconds or so. If hull never actually 'wets
out', then possibly too little material is being applied, and it
may fail to adhere properly. If hull stays wet for more than 15
seconds, or if hull takes on a slightly 'opaque' coating, then this
is an indication that the coating is being applied too heavily.
Coating should never be applied so heavily that it might 'run',
or appear with an orange peel finish.
Following the above
guidelines, a J/24 takes about 7 minutes each side to spray, and
uses approximately 1 quart of Sailkote. A Mumm-36 hull takes 10
minutes each side and 2 quarts should allow good coverage for the
entire hull depending on spray conditions.
Upon completion of
spraying, run acetone through sprayer for 30 seconds or more to
properly clean spray nozzle.
If properly applied,
Sailkote may last an entire season on the hull of a sailboat.
